Yoga Pranayama
The Science of Breath
Pranayama is the ancient yogic practice of breath control, a bridge between body, mind, and spirit. Through conscious regulation of the breath, we access profound states of calm, clarity, and vitality. These time-honored techniques support respiratory health, nervous system balance, and deep inner peace.
Ujjayi Breathing
Tarika Asthmatic
Sit comfortably with spine erect. Slightly constrict the back of your throat to create a soft ocean-like sound. Breathe slowly and deeply through the nose, maintaining the gentle constriction on both inhale and exhale.
Cleansing Breath
Yoga T
Inhale deeply through the nose. Exhale forcefully through the mouth with a strong, cleansing breath. Repeat 3-5 times to release tension and stagnant energy.
Cleansing Breath Variation
Yoga 2
Take a full inhalation. Pause briefly. Exhale in short, powerful bursts through pursed lips. This variation enhances lung capacity and energizes the body.
Bellows Breath
Bhastrika
Sit with a straight spine. Breathe rapidly and forcefully through the nose, pumping the abdomen like a bellows. Equal emphasis on inhale and exhale. Practice 10-20 breaths, then rest.
Cooling Breath
Sheetali
Roll your tongue into a tube. Inhale slowly through the rolled tongue, feeling the cooling sensation. Close your mouth and exhale through the nose. Repeat 5-10 times.
Humming Bee Breath
Bhramari
Close your eyes and ears gently with your fingers. Inhale deeply through the nose. Exhale slowly while making a low humming sound like a bee. Feel the vibration throughout your head.
Expansive Breath
Bhavana Pranayama
Breathe naturally while visualizing your breath expanding into different areas of your body. With each inhale, imagine light and energy filling you. With each exhale, release tension and negativity.
Three-Part Breath
Dirgha Pranayama
Inhale deeply, filling first the belly, then the ribcage, then the upper chest. Exhale in reverse order: chest, ribs, belly. This complete breath maximizes oxygen intake and promotes deep relaxation.
Alternate Nostril Breath
Chandra Kumbhaka
Close right nostril with thumb. Inhale through left nostril. Close left nostril with ring finger, release right nostril, exhale right. Inhale right, close right, exhale left. This balances the nervous system.
Sitanand Breath
Advanced Cooling Technique
An advanced cooling practice combining breath retention and visualization. Inhale slowly, hold the breath while visualizing cool moonlight, then exhale gently. Requires prior pranayama experience.
