What is BPH?

The prostate gland is situated below the bladder and around the urethra. Thus, when enlarged, it obstructs the outflow of urine by compressing and displacing the urethra. It is usually seen in men of approximately 50 years of age. During this period, cells of the inner zone of the prostate gland multiply rapidly and cause enlargement of the gland.

Causes of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy

Prostatic enlargement cannot be attributed to any particular cause. However, there are certain vital factors leading to this condition. They are:

Diagnosis is made on the basis of a detailed history of signs and symptoms, physical examination, and laboratory and imaging tests.

A rectal examination reveals an enlarged prostate and helps rule out prostate cancer.

Specific studies done to confirm BPH are as follows:

  • PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen test helps determine the amount of PSA in the blood. Higher levels of PSA are associated with BPH and cancer of the prostate.
  • Post-voidal residual urine volume test is done to see if the bladder is evacuated completely.
  • Transrectal ultrasound is an imaging procedure carried out to estimate the actual size of the prostate. It also helps in ruling out cancer of the gland. It is done by passing a probe through the rectum.
  • Urodynamic pressure flow studies are done to assess the contractions of the bladder.
  • Intravenous pyelography and CT scans of the urinary organs are done to rule out any other cause of urinary symptoms or infection.

 

BPH Treatment

Benign prostatic hypertrophy requires treatment if at all it starts interfering with normal bladder functions.
