Overview

Laryngitis is the inflammation of your Larynx or voice box, which occurs due to infection or overuse of vocal cords (prolonged speaking, shouting, hollering, and singing). It may also occur due to cold and GERD or acid reflux. Symptoms include pain while swallowing, constant tickling sensation in the throat, hoarseness or soreness in the throat and cough. You may also end up losing your voice completely. Please remember your health is important to us and we will always support you in your journey towards health and freedom.

Laryngitis could be of two types:

  • Short-term
  • Chronic

In case of chronic laryngitis, symptoms last for more than 2 weeks. Acid reflux, tobacco smoke and alcohol are the most common causes of chronic laryngitis. Chronic laryngitis may also be caused by nerve damage, sores or lumps on your vocal cords. If not treated in time, it may lead to infection of your lungs.

What are the Treatment Options Available for Laryngitis?

Conventional Laryngitis treatments include anti-inflammatory and Mucolytic agents, NSAIDs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain, over-the-counter gargling solutions, Zantac and Prilosec (In case of Laryngitis due to GERD), Antibiotics (If the cause of Laryngitis is bacterial). None of these medications cure Laryngitis as they merely address symptoms without targeting the root cause. Moreover, they are accompanied by a host of side-effects. Ibuprofen may cause innumerable side-effects like Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Indigestion and abdominal pain. Prilosec (omeprazole) may also lead to mild abdominal pain and Diarrhea. Gargling with over-the-counter mouthwashes and sucking lozenges does not reach the larynx, but only helps soothe a sore throat. Plenty of voice rest, fluids and air-humidifiers may help a great deal.

You don’t have to take these ghastly medicines to obtain relief. Our Specialists are here to provide you the support you need, and remember the earlier you address the root cause, the sooner you’ll be on the road to health and freedom.

What is Laryngitis?

Laryngitis means inflammation of the larynx or voice box. The larynx is constructed in such a way that it prevents the entrance of food and liquid into the respiratory tract during swallowing, while respiration goes on unhampered.

Laryngitis occurs due to an infection or overuse of the vocal cords.

Laryngitis may be acute or chronic and the chief symptoms of laryngitis are hoarseness of the voice, stridor (a harsh sound produced while breathing) and difficulty in breathing. Laryngitis may be acute or chronic.

Causes of Laryngitis

Laryngitis is usually caused due to a viral infection. Acute laryngitis, in most cases, is either a complication of coryza, or part of some infectious fevers such as influenza or measles. A frequent predisposing factor is chronic infection of the paranasal sinuses. Ill-ventilated, overheated rooms and nasal obstruction are other causative factors.

Reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus and throat could also irritate the larynx and cause inflammation.

Chronic laryngitis usually results either from repeated attacks of acute laryngitis or due to overuse of the voice. Chronic sepsis within the paranasal sinuses or oral cavity, nasal obstruction and heavy tobacco smoking, are predisposing factors in many cases.

Tuberculosis, syphilis, and in a few instances fungal infections, are known causes of specific chronic laryngitis.

Signs and Symptoms of Laryngitis

In Laryngitis, the mucus membrane of the larynx is swollen and congested. It is coated with mucus or occasionally pus beads. The epiglottis and vocal cords, which are normally pale, appear red.

Other Symptoms include:

  • Hoarse voice: The voice is at first hoarse and then reduced to a whisper
  • Cough, with build up of phlegm
  • Malaise
  • Pain on swallowing
  • Tickling sensation in the throat
  • Constant need to clear the throat

Impairment of the voice is the most constant feature of chronic laryngitis. In addition, there is an unproductive cough, with a sensation of itching or pricking in the throat.

When there is a spasm or swelling of the glottis, it may lead to obstruction and tends to show signs of respiratory distress, such as stridor.

If acute laryngitis is not treated, in time, it may lead to infection descending into the lungs.

Diagnosis of Laryngitis

A medical history along with examination of the vocal cords is usually sufficient for diagnosing Laryngitis. At times, a procedure called laryngoscopy is performed, to watch the movement of the vocal cords while speaking.

If hoarseness of the voice fails to improve within 2 weeks of treatment, a careful investigation like biopsy must be carried out to rule out tumors of the larynx. Laryngeal paralysis should also be ruled out.

Laryngitis Treatment

Research suggests that laryngitis treatment depends on the cause, age, vocal demands and clinical characteristics of the individual. Certain measures that can help you recover include: avoiding smoky, dry or dusty environments, not smoking, drinking plenty of fluids, gargling with a mouthwash of warm, salty water, using menthol inhalation and air humidifiers to soothe your airways and help keep them clear, and avoiding speaking or speaking bare minimum to rest your frayed vocal cords.

Conventional medicines prescribed in this condition include anti-inflammatory and mucolytic agents, NSAIDs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain, over-the-counter gargling solutions, Zantac and Prilosec (In case of Laryngitis due to GERD), antibiotics (If the cause of Laryngitis is bacterial). None of these medications cure Laryngitis. They merely look at the superficial symptoms of Laryngitis. Moreover, they are accompanied by a host of side-effects. Ibuprofen may cause innumerable side-effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, Indigestion and abdominal pain. Prilosec (omeprazole) may also lead to mild abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Complementary Natural Care

Natural medicinal systems have been popularly used for laryngitis. This is mainly because they address the reason why your body is susceptible to repeated bouts of laryngitis. Homeopathy, for example, looks to your constitution to strengthen your immunity against laryngitis.

Every single ingredient in every Bloom kit also has huge amounts of traditional use data from Ayurveda and Homeopathy and is supported by modern studies and trials. However, people and governments today tend to have varying opinions and laws regarding natural supplements and complementary therapies. We, therefore, prefer not to make any claims, but instead, point all Patients and Doctors to independent research and clinical studies that support their effects in a scientific manner. In some cases, we compare the results of these studies to those of pharmaceutical medicines, in order to show that natural products can provide just as much or may be more, when compared to drugs that often have side effects.

In order to present this information in an unbiased and up to date manner, we simply show you Google Scholar search results of all scientific articles available on a certain product. We support you in your right to know and choose natural medicine!

Laryngitis Diet

Researchers suggest that food plays an important role in Laryngitis especially acute laryngitis. Including proteins, Vitamin C and E may help in recovering from laryngitis caused by an infection. However, laryngitis due to GERD would respond well to a bland diet.

Recommended food

  • People with Laryngitis or recurrent respiratory infections should follow a diet appropriate for general good health, including consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and fish, whole grain breads and cereals, and oils low in omega-6 fatty acids such as olive oil or canola oil.
  • Vitamin C and E plays a specific role in getting rid of chronic allergies and infections of the respiratory tract.

Foods for Moderate Consumption

  • Milk or Dairy products, oily food, should be moderated

Foods to Avoid

  • Avoid cold foods and drinks. Frozen, canned and preserved food with artificial color and additives should be completely avoided as there are certain substances can worsen respiratory infections.

Home Remedies

  • Drinking the semi liquid mixture of powdered horse gram and black pepper clears sore throat and is very beneficial in laryngitis.
