Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) arises when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed or squeezed at the wrist within the narrow passageway known as the carpal tunnel. This crucial nerve provides sensation to the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring fingers, and controls some muscles at the base of the thumb. When pressure builds up in this tunnel, it can interfere with the nerve's function, leading to a distinct set of symptoms.
The etiology of CTS is often multifactorial, encompassing both mechanical stressors and systemic influences. While repetitive hand and wrist movements are frequently implicated, underlying conditions such as thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and fluid retention can significantly contribute to the development and progression of symptoms.
